NANCY JO SHIFFLETT FOWLER

On June 25, 1934, God must have been having a really good day. This was the day He created the most kind, generous, compassionate, loving, fair, nonjudgmental, caring individual that many who knew her have ever seen. She was called Nancy Jo Shifflett. She was born to Alfred Shifflett and Regina Goethe Shifflett in Cypress Mill, Texas. She was the first of their three children.

Nancy grew up on the Shifflett Ranch in Marble Falls, Texas and loved her childhood in the Hill Country. She loved riding horses, raising livestock for showing, and being the big sister to Gina and Tommy. Her first real job as a teenager was working for Dr. Milton Shepherd where she decided that she wanted to be a nurse. This led her to TCU and Tarleton State University and a few years later, she was a Registered Nurse. She landed a job in Little Rock Arkansas, where she met her future husband, Will D.(Wild Bill) Fowler of New Orleans, Louisiana. The country girl and the flashy city boy hit off right away. They were married in Marble Falls on May 25, 1957. She gave birth to four children whom they raised in Alexandria, Louisiana where Bill worked as a Pharmaceutical Salesman and Nancy, embarked on a nearly 40 year career in nursing.

Nursing was the perfect profession for Miss Nancy as she was the ultimate caregiver, always putting everyone else's comfort and well-being ahead of her own. She was beloved by patients, employees and most everyone with whom she came in contact with. If any of her children, family, or friends were sick, or in a difficult spot in any way, it was always Nancy who was there to care for them and provide comfort. Even total strangers felt her loving, caring ways. You could sense her kindness like a warm loving light. People standing in line with her at the grocery store could somehow become friends in the time it took to ring in the canned goods. If a stranger sat next to her on an airplane, they often connected like lifelong acquaintances sharing fears, hopes and dreams over a two hour flight. Nancy was a walking embodiment of the good in us all. She was compassionate beyond compare. She befriended people from all walks of life regardless of age, appearance, race, life status, lifestyle, background or any other factors. She taught us all through example, not through lecturing, how we should treat one another. Whether we knew her as Nancy, Miss Nancy, Momo, or Mom, we knew how special she was and always will be.

Nancy retired to Marble Falls in 1997, not surprisingly to care for her aging mother. In retirement, her house on Sunset Drive in Marble Falls, provided a warm welcoming oasis for family and friends and a view of the land she grew up on and loved so much. In later years, when Nancy needed care and love when health issues and time took their toll, it was only fitting that she had plenty of loved ones ready to return the love to her. Leading the way, was her daughter, Kym who lived with her part-time and made sure she had a fun and adventurous last few years often traveling, seeing plays and movies, fine dining and generally having fun.

She leaves behind not survivors, but benefactors of her compassion and love including children, Kym Fowler of Austin, TX, Teri Hawsey(Ernie), of Logansport, Will D. Fowler III,(Deedy) of Alexandria, Louisiana and Robert Fowler(Kari) of Grand Junction, Colorado, her brother, Tommy Shifflett and sister Gina Ronhaar(Paul) all of Marble Falls, seven grand children including Chris Bordelon, Zac Bryner, Davis Fowler, Nathan Bryner, Jared Fowler, Ashlee Blunt(Raynard), and Lauren Fowler, and one great grandson, August Blunt. Special nephews are Ron Ronhaar (Jennifer, Lacy and Zac)) and Thomas Shifflett. Special friends include Norma Mercado, Jean Morris, Kizzy Green and family and the whole Real New Orleans/Smoking for Jesus crew that became her extended family. Awaiting her arrival on the other side are her parents, Alfred and Regina Shifflett, her husband, Bill Fowler, and her very special grandson, Brandon Meadows.

NELLIE F. SHIFFLET
The Daily Press, WV, Aug. 27 to Aug. 28, 2012

HAMPTON - Mom was born on May 20, 1926, in Clay County, W.Va., and left us peacefully on Aug. 25, 2012. She was also known as Fosteen, Sally, Grandma and even Grandma Fish, depending on if you were a West Virginia relative, Ohio relative, friend, neighbor, grandchild or great-grandchild. After marrying Dad in 1948, they eventually settled down in the little red brick house in Hampton and finished with their brood of four children. She has three surviving daughters, Nina Vann and husband, Randy of Hampton, Neva Adams and husband, Don of Newport News, and Helen Bateman and husband, Jeff of West Point. Mom and Dad were blessed with nine grandchildren, Jessie Shifflet (Stasha), Karen Tutone (Jason), Sarah Bateman, Beth Bristow (Chris), Jonathan Adams (Adva), Tommy Shifflet, Rachel Compton (Jonathan), Travis Vann and David Adams. Mom and Dad loved their grandkids, but God didn't just stop with those nine, He blessed them with 10 great-grandkids as well, Morgan, Abrielle, Savannah, Mia, Ashlyn, Sammy, Chelsea, Lilly, Ariana and Isaiah. Mom is also survived by two sisters and a brother, in Ohio, that thankfully she just got to see in July, Donna Summers (Radar), Bobby Walker, and Doris Jean Daugherty (Ed); plus some wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews. She loved you all very much! She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph T. Shifflet; and their only son, JB Shifflet. We will all miss coming to see her in that little red brick house, which for many years was a center point of all family going on, getting messages and leaving things for one another. Thanks Mom for not losing your spunkiness or sense of humor, even at the end. It made losing you easier to bear. Please come visit with us from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012, at the funeral home, with Phillip Murdock, Minister of Lifepointe Christian Church officiating. She will then be laid to rest next to Daddy and JB at Hampton Memorial Gardens. If you wish you may make a donation to one of Mom's favorite charities, they are: American Cancer Society , P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718 or Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507. NIMROD SHIFFLETT

The Greene County Record, Stanardsville, VA, Mar. 1929

Nimrod Shifflett an exemplary citizen of Bacon Hollow, died Saturday, March 16, 1929, at his home at old Nimrod, aged more then 80 years. He is survived by his widow and one son, Pat. The burial was at home Monday afternoon. Mr. Shifflett was a man of intense religious nature. All his life he endeavored to live a life which find favor with his lord and master. In his prime he was exhorter of earnestness and effectiveness. He often spoke and prayed at services and in the bygone days when camp meetings were permeated with a soul quickening atmosphere he was a leader in bringing the sinner and the thoughtless to a realization of his or her unsaved condition. About a half century ago there was a camp meeting ground on the pike above Stanardsville. Each summer there was held a meeting lasting two or more weeks. The Attendance was large, notwithstanding the limited means of conveyance in those days, so soon after the civil war. Often whole families walked many miles to participate in the services, carrying their food with them and remaining several days if not until the meeting closed. One summer the earth was parched and vegetation withered by a drought, which had been of long duration. Mr. Shifflett prayed for rain at the meeting that summer. He prayed not for a gully washer, but a three-day drizzle. That very night the three-day drizzle began though when petition to the Almighty was made the sky was cloudless. Nimrod post office, which served the mountain people for many years but was discontinued, was named for him.
