Small quick blaze kills elderly man in Dundalk area
By Robert Hilson Jr.
A city fire official said it was one of “those strange type of fires” – the kind
that are not very big or last very long, but they usually leave their mark. That
was the case yesterday. Charles Frazier, 69, was killed when a one-alarm fire
quickly swept through his second-floor apartment of a house in the 6600 block of
Detroit Ave. in the Dundalk area. Fire officials believe the fire started after
Frazier fell asleep while smoking in bed. Both city and Baltimore County units
responded to the fire. Firefighters found Frazier’s body near a window in the
bedroom. He was pronounced dead on the scene from smoke inhalation. Fir
officials said he also received second and third-degree burns over his head and
upper torso. A neighbor who saw smoke coming from Frazier’s bedroom window
reported the fire at 3:45 p. m. Less than 20 minutes later, the fire was
declared under control. “It was just so fast,” said Patricia Womer, who lives
next door. “I couldn’t see how it could kill him in that little time.” The fire
was contained to the second floor, but the first floor did receive water damage
at about $5.000. Neighbors said Frazier, a widower recently moved into the top
floor of the wooden cottage-style house after living in another house in the
neighborhood more than 20 years. “My kids grew up with his kids right here in
the neighborhood.” Said Womer. “He was here before I moved here.” The house was
owned by Edgar Chambers, who lived on the first floor. Chambers was alerted to
the fire by a neighbor and escaped without injury. Frazier recently retired from
Bethlehem Steel Corp. wher he worked more that 30 years. Residents in the area
said Frazier was a quiet man, who occasionally sat on the steps in front of
house and talked to neighborhood children.

ELIZABETH LUCILLE FRAZIER THOMAS
Elizabeth Lucille Frazier Thomas, born November 18, 1940, went peacefully to be
with the Lord on Friday, February 16, 2018. She was known by many monikers:
Lucille, Liz, Lucy, Momma, Memaw, and her most beloved, Goosey. Liz grew up in
the small town of Free Union, Va. She married James Thomas Sr. and settled with
their family in Charlottesville, Va. Although she moved to the city, she stayed
true to her country roots; spending her weekends yard sale-ing and shopping at
the Goodwill. They were married for more than 20 years, and although their
marriage ended, they retained a beautiful and mutual adoration for each other,
including a lovely friendship that Liz established with James's second wife,
Sandra Thomas. Liz worked at Crouse-Hinds for over twenty years, making numerous
life-long friends along her path. After leaving to focus on her health and
well-being, Liz decided to become the face of Kenny's Auto Repair. The only
thing brighter than her red hair was her spunky sense of humor, which served her
well in the automotive industry. Liz loved making friends with any person she
met. She knew no strangers and quickly captured the heart of all she
encountered. Most recently, she spent her time welcoming customers with a
friendly face at Fox's Caf‚. She could be found at table one; pushing dessert
and bragging about her family. Liz delighted in her family. After speaking with
her for just 5 minutes, you knew about every one of her six children, 18
grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. Liz lived
her life joyfully and spirited; never missing her Tuesday night bingo games,
Saturday night concerts performed by her grandson's band, or Sunday morning
church services. She loved exploring the country with her family, but especially
cherished her trips to Tennessee with her kids. She was kind, compassionate,
forgiving, and loving. Liz had a giving heart and was always looking out for
others. She did all she could to ensure others never needed or wanted for
anything and she worked very hard participating in fundraisers for several local
children's medical needs. Above everything, Liz was a devoted mother. She raised
six wonderful children whom she loved fiercely. Her pride and joys were her
grandchildren and great grandchildren. She could spend hours with each of her
"babies" and never tire of their company. She was preceded in death by her
parents, Grover and Elizabeth Frances McCauley Frazier; brother, Ray Frazier;
sister, Joyce (Raymond) Wilburger; and the father of her children, James Thomas
Sr. She is survived by her six children, James (Debbie) Thomas Jr., Kenneth
(Kim) Thomas, Diane (Randy) Fox, Jeff (Heidi) Thomas, Cathy Fogle, and Donna
Thomas; sister, Chris (Richard) Marshall; and brothers, Grover "Jerry" Frazier
and George (Jannie) Frazier; her 18 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and a
great-great grandchild; as well as countless nieces, nephews, and friends
including a very special friend, Virginia White. A funeral service will be
conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at the Teague Chapel. Interment
will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the
funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2018, where the family
invites you to celebrate Liz's love for life by drinking a cold Diet Pepsi and
then finishing it up with an Almond Joy. Condolences and memories may be shared

to all who knew her. From birth, Kelli always displayed a zest for life with her
radiant smile, magnetic personality and self-determination. Among the things
that she enjoyed the most were swimming, riding on the mower, music, eating "ice
ice", playing with cell phones and digital cameras. Butterflies also became a
significant part of her life with the many butterfly kisses she received. Also,
the MLD Foundation's logo is a butterfly created with the silhouette of two
children's faces that represents the hope of a life free of MLD. During the last
10 months of her life, Kelli lost almost all of her abilities and yet never lost
her spirit for life. Although many of her days were filled with suffering, Kelli
always found a reason to smile. While her life was short, Kelli's exuberant
spirit affected all who met her. The family would like to thank her entire
medical team for the sincere care and compassion given to her throughout her
disease. They would also like to extend their gratitude to all in the community
who supported them during this time. A Celebration of Life Service will be held

LINDA BETTS FRAZIER
Linda Betts Frazier, 89, of Harrisonburg, passed on to the Lord on Friday, May
30, 2008. She was the daughter of the late Fred K. Betts, Jr. and Linda Evelyn
Bibb Betts. A lifelong resident of Harrisonburg, she graduated from Harrisonburg
High School, Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, and at age 66, received
the first Master’s of Music from James Madison University. Linda was a gifted
musician and performer and an important contributor to the fabric of our
community. As a youth, she lived in a house on Court Square, she sang and danced
on the stage of the old Virginia theater, as a teen she broadcast her own radio
show from WSVA’s downtown studio. She developed her beautiful voice into a light
and agile coloratura soprano. She was lead soprano of the Westminster College
Touring Choir in 1939 and toured all 48 states. She sang on the original
soundtrack of Walt Disney’s Fantasia under the direction of Leopold Stokowski.
One summer home from college, she met the love of her life, Robert Y. Frazier.
They married in June 1942 at First Presbyterian Church in a large Naval wedding.
She pursued her career as a church music director and vocal instructor in many
different communities during the early WWII years. While her husband was in the
Pacific theater, she and her mother established an enemy aircraft early warning
station at their hilltop home east of town. This station was manned 24 hours a
day during the war, had a direct line to Langley Army Air Base, and involved
hundreds of local people in the war effort. After the war, she and her husband
decided to stay in Harrisonburg and started The Frazier Quarry in 1946. Linda
Betts chose not to pursue a professional singing career in New York City and
instead devoted her life’s energy to her family, music, connecting people to
their historical roots, and community service. Her boundless energy and
enthusiasm led to achievements that touched many lives. Musically, she shared
her gifts and training by organizing the Rockingham Community Chorus, as a Choir
Director at Asbury United Methodist and Temple Beth-El; as a voice instructor at
Shenandoah Conservatory in Dayton and James Madison University; and as a soloist
for hundreds of weddings and funerals throughout the area. An enthusiastic
genealogist, she traced dozens of family lines to find ancestors that qualified
for the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the
Confederacy, the Jamestowne Society, Daughters of Founders and Patriots, and
many other historical organizations. Linda and her mother organized the
Rockingham Home Demonstration Club in the late 1940s, she was elected one of the
first woman elders in the Presbyterian Church, a long-time board member of the
Salvation Army, Shenandoah University, and the Virginia Quilt Museum. She
recently spearheaded a project to preserve the remains of city founder Thomas
Harrison and re-inter them at Woodbine cemetery and also organized the
Shenandoah Valley Company of the Jamestowne Society enrolling over 30
descendants of Jamestowne settlers. In essence, Linda was a woman of singular
energy and talent and grace. Linda is survived by: her husband, Robert Y.
Frazier; two sons, Robert Betts Frazier and Bibb Yost Frazier; her
daughters-in-law: Dolly Sease Frazier and Paula Knupp Frazier; nine
grandchildren: Robert, David, Austin, Michael, Cy, Macie, and Janie Frazier,
Amanda and Simon Kyger. She is pre-deceased by her only brother, Fred K. Betts,
III and two infant sons. A memorial service, conducted by Dr. John Sloop, will
be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at First Presbyterian Church on Court Square in
Harrisonburg. The family invites friends to stay for a reception following the
service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia
Quilt Museum Building Fund, 301 S. Main St., Harrisonburg, Va. 22801. If you
have a memory of Linda’s life you would like to share, please take a couple of
minutes to leave a phone message sharing your memory. Her family has set up a
special answering machine line at 540-437-9449 for this purpose.

ROBERT YOST FRAZIER
Robert Yost Frazier, 92, of Harrisonburg, passed on to the Lord Thursday, Sept.
25, 2008. He was the son of the late Frank H. Frazier and Clara Yost Frazier. He
grew up in St. Clairsville, Ohio, received his Civil Engineering degree from
Ohio State University and was one of the oldest Professional Engineers in Ohio
or Virginia still practicing his skills.
Bob grew up in rural Ohio helping his father, a surveyor of underground coal
mines. At university, in the early 1930s, Ohio State's Civil Engineering
students were steeped in the new technology of reinforced steel and concrete
design. The application of these new materials allowed drastic improvements and
changes in the architecture of buildings and the engineering of highways and
bridges. Bob specialized in the field of concrete design and the engineering of
materials used to make concrete: crushed stone and sand. He was hired,
immediately, by the Ohio Department of Highways in 1938. Later, at age 23, he
was hired by Allied Chemical Co. to build and manage the asphalt plant in charge
of paving the "Skyline Drive" being constructed by the CCC at that time. He
relocated to Harrisonburg to construct this asphalt plant in the quarry of Mr.
Fred K. Betts Jr. He and Mr. Betts developed a friendship of mutual respect and
shared engineering skills. Mr. Betts introduced Bob Frazier to his daughter,
Linda. After completion of the Skyline Drive job, Bob was promoted to the
corporate offices of Allied Chemical in New York City. He became engaged to
Linda Betts, who attended college nearby in Princeton, N.J. With the prospect of
worldwide conflict looming, Bob entered OCS with the U.S. Navy in the fall of
1941 and became an officer in the U.S. Navy submarine corps. In 1942, he married
Linda Betts in a huge naval wedding at First Presbyterian Church in
Harrisonburg. Soon afterward, he began active duty in submarines in the western
Pacific from 1943 to 1945. During this time, he went on many submarine patrols
against enemy ships and later on "lifeguard" duty for downed fliers during the
bombing of the Japanese mainland. After the armistice, Bob came home to
Harrisonburg and started the Frazier Quarry in 1946. This was an exciting time
in the growth of our nation and Harrisonburg, Va. A surge in and population
expansion drove the need for a national interstate highway system, new
factories, airports, and other construction. All of this new construction was
designed with concrete as a prime design element. Bob Frazier started Betts and
Frazier Concrete in 1953 to gear up for the demand for concrete that would one
day reach the small town of Harrisonburg. Concurrently, he and like-minded
businessmen came together to promote the economic development of our community
through the Chamber of Commerce and the Rockingham Development Corporation. He
was a past-President and active member of both organizations. During this time,
the Harrisonburg Bypass was built (1958) and then expanded into Interstate 81.
Factories like Walker Mfg., Electronic Specialties (later Dunham-Bush), Kawneer,
AMP, and other companies built plants in our community. The Shenandoah Valley
Regional airport, Blue Ridge Community College, and other major infrastructure
projects happened at this time due to the efforts of Bob and many other business
and civic leaders. Bob was one of the last of this prescient and dynamic group
of Harrisonburg businessmen. Within the crushed stone industry, Bob was
instrumental in the development of VDOT stone specifications, production and
quality control methods to make aggregates and sand for construction. Bob's
influence on state and national stone specifications is a legacy that lives on
today. His 1968 and 1977 plant designs for Frazier Quarry were revolutionary
then and still in use today. Personally, Bob was a quiet man of great dignity
and personal character. His very profile and manner exuded confidence and
demanded respect. A man of immense work ethic, he found great relaxation and
pleasure in mowing his lawn and tending his pool. He loved to read and had a
penchant for historical fiction from authors like Len Deighton, C.S. Forester,
Kenneth Roberts, and Patrick O'Brian. He was a lifelong member of First
Presbyterian Church on Court Square, where he was an Elder and past Chair of
Building Committee. He was one of the oldest members of the Harrisonburg Rotary
Club. He knew Jesse Owens, of 1936 Olympics fame, at Ohio State and was a
lifelong supporter of Ohio State athletics. The annual Ohio State/Michigan
football game was always a tense but never-missed event. He also rarely missed
the activities of his grandchildren. He would strive to attend football games,
soccer matches, music recitals, choir concerts, and graduations. As both a role
model and as a source of sage advice, his sons and grandchildren could always
rely on "Pa-Pa." In essence, Bob Frazier was a rock-solid gentleman of uncommon
wisdom. He is survived by two sons: Robert Betts Frazier and Bibb Yost Frazier;
his daughters-in-law: Dolly Sease Frazier and Paula Knupp Frazier; nine
grandchildren: Robert, David, Austin, Michael, Cy, Linda Macie, and Janie
Frazier, Amanda and Simon Kyger. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Linda
Betts Frazier, two infant sons, his sister, Joan Frazier, and his
daughter-in-law, Carla Mumbert Frazier. The family will receive friends between
6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Kyger Funeral Home. A memorial service, conducted by
Dr. John Sloop, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, at First
Presbyterian Church on Court Square in Harrisonburg. The family invites all to
stay for a reception after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 17 N.
Court Square, Harrisonburg, VA 22801. LEAVE A MEMORY. If you have a memory of
Bob's life that you would like to share, please take a couple of minutes to
leave a phone message sharing your memory. The family has set up a special
answering machine at (540) 437-9449 for this purpose.

TERESA GARRISON
FRAZIER
Teresa Garrison Frazier, 56, of Crozet passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2017,

Shifflett. Teresa is survived by her high school sweetheart, and husband of 37
years, David Frazier; her daughter, Christina "Tina" Staton and her husband,

her life, her grandchildren, Austin Ryan Staton, Lily Grace Staton, Avery Rose
Frazier, and Ellie Kate Frazier, who she loved with all of her soul as they gave
her reason to move forward every day. Teresa will also be sorely missed by
Jessica Schneiderman, Eric Bibb, ad Lucille Norvell, who were very special in
her life. She also leaves behind her three dachshunds, or fur children, Cody,
Jake, and Dexter. For 17 years, Teresa battled an autoimmune disease that pushed
her body to its every limit. She fought her disease on a daily basis, and
endured so much pain for the sake of having "a little more time" with her
family. She loved her husband, children, grandchildren, and dogs as much as
humanly possible. She would have done anything for them, and they all knew her
as the best Wife, Mama, and Nana that anyone could ever have. She could not have

feel like they were the most important things in her world. She was so brave,
and strong. It is utterly remarkable to think back on the strength that she
endured and the love that she showed. Teresa was a long time member of Crozet
United Methodist Church. Most of her working career was spent as an
